Online dating safety tips are no longer optional reading - they are baseline literacy. The FTC's 2025 Consumer Sentinel report logged $1.14 billion in losses to romance scams in a single year, and Pew Research's 2024 survey found that 52% of online daters have experienced harassment or a safety scare on at least one platform. Here's the good news: the same tools that scammers exploit are the ones that protect you, if you set them up correctly.
This guide walks through the seven safety layers we recommend to every new RealIntimacy member - from the moment you choose a password to the moment you delete your account. Use it as a checklist, not a lecture.
Five moves that take fifteen minutes and stop 90% of common attacks. Do them once when you sign up to any private dating site, and never think about them again.
Spin up a free address you use nowhere else. If a data breach hits the dating service, your primary inbox, banking and work accounts stay untouched. On RealIntimacy registration only requires an email - no phone number, no real name.
Credential stuffing - attackers trying leaked passwords from other sites - is the most common dating-account hijack. Generate the password in a manager (1Password, Bitwarden, iCloud Keychain) and never reuse it.
Enable 2FA the moment you create the account. Authenticator apps like Authy or Google Authenticator are safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted via SIM-swap attacks.
Phone photos can carry GPS coordinates of where they were taken. On iPhone, share the image as a screenshot or use the "Options → Location: Off" toggle when sending. On Android, use the gallery app to remove EXIF data.
Disable email marketing if you do not want it. Set search visibility to verified members only. On RealIntimacy you can opt out of email notifications and delete every byte of data in one click from the privacy menu.
Verifying a profile before you meet means confirming the person on the other end is real, single, and who they say they are. The fastest free method is a reverse image search - drop their main profile photo into Google Lens or TinEye and check whether it appears on a stock-photo site, an Instagram account belonging to someone else, or a romance-scam database. Genuine matches pass this test instantly.
The three-signal verification rule
Before you agree to meet, collect at least three independent signals that the person is real: a verified-member badge on the platform, a short video call, and a social profile (LinkedIn, Instagram, or a public hobby account) older than six months. If you cannot get all three, postpone the date.
Why does this matter? According to the FTC, the median individual loss in a romance scam reached $2,000 in 2024 - driven almost entirely by people who skipped the verification step. Twenty minutes of due diligence is cheap insurance.
Use the platform's built-in tools first. Verified-member badges, AI-detected fake-photo flags and report buttons exist because they work - they catch most bad actors before you ever see the profile. Treat anyone reluctant to video chat after a few days of messaging as a serious warning sign.
The first in-person meeting is the highest-stakes moment in the entire dating funnel. Smart first-date practices boil down to one principle: keep control of your time, your location, and your transport.
Pick a public place you already know - a busy coffee shop, a popular restaurant, a daytime art gallery. Daylight beats evening for a first meet. Skip anywhere isolated, anywhere that requires a long ride together, and anywhere that doubles as someone's home.
Share the name, profile screenshot, venue and end time with a trusted friend. Set a check-in text for halfway through. Apps like Apple's Find My or Google's Trusted Contacts let you share live location for the duration of the date and nothing more.
Drive yourself, take a rideshare you booked, or use public transit. Never accept a pick-up from someone you haven't met. The bottom line: you should be able to leave at any moment without negotiating.
One drink is plenty. Keep your drink in sight at all times - drink spiking accounts for an estimated 1 in 20 reported dating-app safety incidents (RAINN, 2024). If anything feels off, leave; trust your gut over politeness.
Photo privacy is the safety layer most new users underestimate. A single photo with a recognizable storefront in the background can geolocate you within a city block. The fix is a habit, not a tool: crop tightly, avoid landmarks, and never share images you would not want to surface in a Google search.
Modern private dating sites add a second layer with AI-powered nudity moderation. On RealIntimacy, every uploaded image and every photo sent in chat is analyzed in real time. Explicit content is automatically blurred and flagged, and recipients choose whether to unblur. The result is a respectful environment where you control what enters your eyes - and what leaves your camera roll.
Never send an explicit photo before you have established trust
Once an image leaves your device you can never fully retrieve it. Use private rooms with verified members only, blur previews by default, and remember that AI moderation protects you from receiving unwanted content - but it cannot protect a photo you chose to send. When in doubt, do not send.
Two more habits: turn off photo sync from your camera roll to social apps so a screenshot accident does not become a public post, and check your match's profile photos through reverse search before exchanging anything personal. The same AI that protects your inbox is only as good as your own first instinct.
If you spot two or more of these in the same conversation, unmatch and report. No exceptions, no second chances, no "but they seemed so nice".
The right to disappear matters. On a trustworthy private dating site, account deletion takes one tap and erases everything - profile, photos, chat history, billing data - within seconds, not weeks. On RealIntimacy you'll find the option in Settings → Privacy → Delete account; the confirmation is immediate and irreversible, as GDPR and CCPA both require.
Before you delete, do two things. First, cancel any active subscription so you are not billed again - deleting the profile does not always cancel the payment. Second, save anything you want to keep: meaningful messages, a partner's contact details, or screenshots of memorable moments. After deletion, nothing is recoverable, and that is exactly the point.
If you only want a break, pause your profile instead. Pausing hides you from search and disables new messages, but keeps your data and subscription intact for when you return. For more on what we store and for how long, read our private dating sites privacy policy.
